Nursery Care this Fall

Nursery care will be available during Sunday school starting when adult Sunday school starts.

The Nursery will be available at 9am this fall if anyone needs child care. There will also be a Sunday school class from 9 to 10 am for the 3 to 5 year olds and the teachers will bring the kids to the nursery when the class ends. This class will start when all the other adult classes start.

Weekly What’s Happening – July 4, 2010

All Church Potluck Picnic after worship July 4^th !

We will have a potluck picnic Sunday, July 4 as a start to your 4^th of July festivities. It will be right after worship. Bring the food you want to share to church with you. Refrigerated items may be placed in the refrigerators in the kitchen.

Remember to ask Patti Meyer, Carol Johnson, Rev Brett, Bea Cook, Bill Cook about this years adventure a the Oregon-Idaho Conference Annual Meeting. They all attended this event last week as our representatives. We also had two folks attend the leadership institute seminars on Friday last week – Rudy Chevalier and Elaine Ledbetter – ask them about that event.

Book Club is reading for:

June – The Other Game: Lessons from How Life Is Played In Mexican Villages by Phil Dahl-Bredine and Stephen Hickens.

Book Club meets on the fourth Monday at 1:30 pm at Lucile Stoffer’s home.

We collected 307# of Clothing for Western Farm Workers this month. Our next collection date is Sunday, July 11^th

We took 141# of food to the Oregon Food Bank this month. Our next delivery day is July 11^th. You may bring food anytime.

Got junk? We will take it! VBS is looking for…

· Clean jars with lids – peanut butter, small pasta sauce, jam or salsa size.

· Small plastic animals (less than 2”)

· Wildflower seeds

· Silk flowers

· Plumber’s tape

ReKindle Youth Group is collecting redeemable cans, glass bottles and plastic bottles for their Mexico mission trip in 2011! We will be depositing them every 3^rd Sunday so please drop them off in the marked bin in the Hub. Please start saving! Thank You! From ReKindle’s youth council

Good Samaritans start new mission project of care boxes for deployed people attached to the congregation!

Your help is needed so Christ Church can send these boxes to our military men and women in combat zones. Our goal is to send boxes monthly. We need money for postage and buying the goodies, We need people to shop for the items. Please stop by the table in the Hub for more information.

We also need the names & mailing addresses of the military folks on duty in war zones. We have some names but are short on addresses. We do not want to miss anyone. Please leave names and addresses in the church office or give to Ed & Claynette Hemke.

Noisy offering during july for imagine no malaria

Imagine if we could stamp out malaria . . . if all children had the opportunity to grow to adulthood . . . if we could change millions of lives for generations to come. Imagine No Malaria is an initiative of the people of The United Methodist Church to raise $75 million to eliminate malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. In partnership with our brothers and sisters in Africa, the gifts and resources shared through Imagine No Malaria will empower an entire continent to achieve a sustainable victory over the disease. We will accomplish this goal together with a comprehensive approach to fighting malaria that includes improving prevention, education, communication and treatment.

THIS IS A FIGHT WE MUST WIN, BECAUSE…

…every 30 seconds, a child in Africa dies of malaria.

…malaria claims more than 1 million lives each year.

…infants, children and pregnant women are at greatest risk.

…90 percent of malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa.

But despite those grim statistics, malaria is preventable, treatable—and beatable.

OUR GOAL: $75 MILLION. EXPANSIVE PARTICIPATION.

Every dollar counts. Sharing a gift will make possible critical malaria fighting tools like rapid diagnostic tests, anti-malaria campaigns in schools, new research, and infrastructure improvements—vastly increasing delivery of life-saving care.

MALARIA BREEDS POVERTY.

Malaria is both the cause and result of poverty. For many African families, earnings that might be spent on food are diverted to pay for treatment and travel to clinics. When lost productivity is factored in, malaria’s impact on vulnerable populations amounts to an estimated $12 billion annually.

UNITING FAITH AND WORKS.

As United Methodists, we are strong—11 million strong. We believe the world is our parish. Every life is important to us, and every one of us is important in making this vision real. In reaching out to people to relieve suffering, we find a revitalization of our own faith and our understanding of what it means to be Christ followers.

WE CAN MAKE MALARIA HISTORY.

Malaria is a devastating disease in Africa. It consumes 40 percent of public health funds, and is responsible for 60 percent of outpatient clinic visits. The goal is to eliminate deaths from malaria by 2015. By overcoming malaria’s burden, we will also make significant progress in the fight against other diseases of poverty like tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

Meat & Fire

This summer, we will have a monthly opportunity for the men of the church to meet for food, fun, and fellowship. It is our Meat and Fire barbeques starting on Wednesday, June 23 6:00 p.m. at Glen Campbell’s home. Glen’s home is at 395 sw Delta Drive. Delta Drv is south off Walker Rd at the power lines, about 3 blocks west of 158th ( Fred Meyer).

This is open to men of all ages. Just bring the meat (or alternative) that you would like to cook for yourself (or have one of our expert chefs cook). We will have side dishes and beverages and just ask for a donation to cover the cost.

Please also invite men who might be interested in our church and would like to meet people in an informal setting. We hope you can be there.

February 28th an earthquake devastated much of Chile. Now as the country turns from immediate survival to the process of rebuilding they are calling for volunteers in Mission teams to come be part of the repair and rebuilding.

Annual Conference Assistants
Can you volunteer for a couple hours at Annual Conference this June? Barbara Collins is looking for a few good people to assist with registration/checking people in at the Conference Center on Thursday from 8am until 1pm. We also need 8 people to assist with ushering to the Saturday evening worship, which is the Ordination service at Salem First UMC. You’ll need to be at the rehearsal on Friday (6/11) at 9pm and the service starts at 7pm on Saturday evening. Please arrive 30 minutes early.

Traveling Vacation Bible School Leader
The General Board of Global Ministries Missionaries at Spirit Lake Reservation in North Dakota have a “Traveling Vacation Bible School” during June and July. There is a small van available for 2 or 3 people who will visit at least 7 different churches durning these 2 months – basically leading VBS.

All materials for the school are provided as is gas for the van. Housing will be provided in the churches and food by the church members. There is no stipend for this placement.

Saltzman Road Construction Update 21-May-10

Current Activities

Remove formwork and begin backfilling of Retaining Wall No. 5 (St Pius X).
Begin footing excavation and rebar installation of Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library)
Grading for new curb and gutters along west side of Saltzman, between 128th Terrace and Lovejoy.
Continue with installation of new 8” water line between Cornell and Filbert.
Continue pulling of new conduit wires, vault and transformer connections, and transfer of services over to the new facilities. Transfer of services to the new facilities will be performed by specific utility provider or their designated contractor.
Continue with the relocation of overhead utility lines and transfer of services along east side of Saltzman Road, north of St. Pius X to Coleman Street (work to be performed by specific utility provider or their contractor).

Upcoming Activities (2 weeks out)

Continue with construction of Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library).
Complete installation of new 8” water line.
Installation of new signing and striping between 128th Terrace and Bauer Woods Drive.
Activation of new traffic signal at 128th Terrace and flashing beacon at Burton.
Continue pulling of new conduit wires, vault and transformer connections, and transfer of services over to the new facilities. Transfer of services to the new facilities will be performed by specific utility provider or their designated contractor.
Continue with the relocation of overhead utility lines and transfer of services along east side of Saltzman Road, north of St. Pius X to Coleman Street (work to be performed by specific utility provider or their contractor).

REMINDER: The project area has been designated a construction zone and the posted speed limit has been temporarily reduce to 25 mph between Cornell Road and the south approach of Bauer Woods Drive (this includes the recently paved portion of the roadway). All existing traffic restrictions remain in place, including left turn restrictions and school speed zone.

As with most construction activities, there will be noise, dust, and traffic impacts. The County apologizes in advance for these inconveniences and appreciates your understanding and patience.
